A Conversation with State Representative Deb Lavender
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Our representative democracy fundamentally depends on participation from all citizens. Gerrymandering, along with our primary system of voting, threatens the very core of true representation. Further, our current campaign finance laws allow dark money to enter the fray, distorting our ability to make clear choices when voting on politicians and issues. In this podcast episode, we talk with Missouri state representative Deb Lavender and discuss how our current system disenfranchises people and reduces our true sense of democracy. To mitigate these depressing trends, we discuss new developments, such as ranked choice voting, multi-winner districts and “top two” primary elections. These new ideas are being implemented in other parts of our country and may well put us back on the road to a more perfect union.

Sunday Jul 05, 2020
Sunday Jul 05, 2020
Morris Pearl, chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, talks about the organization’s vision for a better America. This vision includes a nation where every person has as much political power as millionaires; where every American who works full time can afford their basic needs; where millionaires and large corporations - who have benefited most from our country’s assets - pay a larger share of the taxes used to run our country. What motivates a millionaire to want to join an organization that advocates that millionaires should pay more taxes? Morris provides some fascinating insight to the issues America faces these days and how the wealthy can - and should - actively participate to help create a more perfect union.

Legal Advisor Chad Peace Discusses the Independent Voter Project
Sunday Jun 21, 2020
Sunday Jun 21, 2020
This evening we talk with Chad Peace, legal advisor for the Independent Voter Project. The Independent Voter Project (IVP) is a non-profit 501(c)4 organization that seeks to re-engage nonpartisan voters and promote nonpartisan election reform through initiatives, litigation, and voter education. IVP works with organizations around the country to reduce the institutional barriers that limit electoral competition and restrict the nonpartisan right to vote, thus insulating the two major parties from competition. The IVP believes that democracy functions best when most people participate. They also believe that political representatives should be held accountable to their entire community, not just their party.
Chad Peace is a nationally recognized leader in election law, voter rights, and a 40 under 40 winner from the American Association of Political Consultants. He is a partner at the law firm of Peace & Shea LLP and legal strategist for the Independent Voter Project. In addition to providing strategic legal advice and advocacy, he has managed and developed campaigns to increase voter rights and participation, to promote and expand California’s nonpartisan primary efforts, and to reach out to otherwise ignored and disenchanted voters. Chad developed the voter outreach strategy for California’s successful nonpartisan primary initiative and conducted the campaign to draft a current United States Senator to run for office. Most recently, he authored the City of San Diego’s Measure K and manages voter outreach efforts in local, statewide, and national efforts, including a major candidate for president of the United States.

The Alliance Party Manifesto
Sunday Jun 07, 2020
Sunday Jun 07, 2020
"Our political reform movement’s singular goal is to dramatically transform our dysfunctional partisan democracy of extremism into a functional democracy driven by innovative and term-limited political leaders. Unlike the duopoly, our aims are not to move the direction of the country Left or Right, but Forward. We want to create a revitalized, world-leading United States: America 2.0." Thus begins the Alliance Party’s manifesto. During this episode, Jim Rex, the Alliance Party’s National Chair, and Jonathan Etheridge, one of the Alliance Party’s “At-Large” members, discusses the manifesto and explains its relevance and importance in today’s political environment. Our country is suddenly faced with multiple challenges, from a soaring federal debt, to a pandemic-induced depression-era unemployment rate, to a health crisis, and, tragically, to long-standing racial tensions that have boiled over into our streets. Truly, a vision of an “America 2.0” is desperately needed in this challenging time, and the Alliance Party’s manifesto will help lead us back to the America we were destined to be all along. This is a podcast you won’t want to miss!
